Yearly, throughout Durga Puja, almost three crore individuals go to Kolkata’s pandals. During the last decade, increasingly modern artists have been concerned in conceptualising, designing, and orchestrating huge installations which have gone far past standard pujopandals. And now, the evolving nature of public artwork throughout this season is catching the eye of the artwork cognoscenti — rivalling any of the massive artwork reveals world wide.

As a novice pandal-hopper, Sharan Apparao of Apparao Galleries was not too long ago a part of a small preview group. Invited by her artist buddy Sayntan Maitra, she spent three evenings visiting intricately-crafted pavilions, assembly the artists, artisans and technicians behind the installations, and even catching a present by itinerant puppeteers within the intimacy of a personal courtyard.
