The Hyderabad-based theatre director refers back to the new play Killer Joe by Tracy Letss, which has ‘strictly for 18+’, ‘‘Not for the Weak Hearted’ and “Intercourse, nudity, medication, profanity and violence” as its warnings. To be staged this weekend in Hyderabad, Killer Joe, a collaboration between Storyboard Productions and Preksha Theatre Firm (PTC) is a ‘horrifying crime drama presenting a proctologist’s view of the American household and has a particularly perverse ending’. Producer Preksha has needed to current the play ever since she received the rights to the play, virtually six years in the past.

The 105-minute-long (with a break) debut play by award-winning playwright Tracy Letts narrates the story of Chris, a younger drug seller in determined want of money. With ‘impactful motion scenes’, the artistes — Yash Puri, Kajol Dubey, Abhinav Rastogi, Arushi Aggarwal and Jonas David — taking part in 5 characters have been making ready for 3 months now.

The director’s problem was to make sure the ‘disturbing scenes’ don’t seem as the primary story or look pressured or out of context. “We wish the viewers to give attention to its story, characters and screenplay; the darkish scenes are solely a part of the story and don’t carry ahead the narrative.”

With three days to go for the play’s staging, Sandeep is a bundle of nerves. “Nobody has ever experimented with one thing like this in Hyderabad’s theater circuit.
