KOLKATA: Over a decade after the lynching of a younger trader in Sodepur’s Gandhinagar, a Barrackpore courtroom on Tuesday sentenced 5 people, together with Panihati councillor Tarak Guha, to life imprisonment.
Guha, a councillor from ward 11 of Panihati Municipality, was arrested instantly after showing in courtroom on Friday for the primary time because the 2014 lynching of fish trader Sambhu Chakraborty. The choose convicted him, alongside together with his brother Nepal Guha and three others-Jaydeb Mukherjee, Shyamal Das and Haripada Sarkar. Three different accused-Mallika De, Nava Chakraborty and Buron Das-were acquitted as a result of a lack of proof.
The case dates again to Sept 25, 2014, when Chakraborty was allegedly crushed to demise by a mob, together with Guha and his associates, on suspicion of theft. The incident occurred after a cell phone and Rs 10,000 wee reportedly stolen from a native temple.
Following the assault, Chakraborty’s spouse, Jyotsna, lodged an FIR. Guha’s identify surfaced in the course of the investigation.
After practically 10 years of authorized proceedings, Judge Ayan Kumar Bandyopadhyay of the Third Additional District and Sessions Court in Barrackpore discovered 5 people responsible and awarded them life imprisonment.
After the decision, Jyotsna mentioned: “I fought for years to get justice for my innocent husband. It was an immense struggle to raise my two children alone. I even had to take jobs as a domestic help to fund their education. No one supported me. They stood by the accused councillor.”
