Tata Motors on Tuesday (March 4, 2025) launched the first-ever trials of hydrogen-powered heavy duty trucks in an effort to assess their viability for long haul transportation options.
The trial section will span as much as 24 months and entails deployment of 16 superior hydrogen-powered autos with various configurations and payload capacities.
The trucks, geared up with Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H2-ICE) and Fuel Cell (H2-FCEV) applied sciences, shall be examined on India’s most outstanding freight routes, together with these round Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar.
“For heavy duty, long haul transportation battery electric doesn’t appear to be a viable technology. So while there are improvements and developments happening in battery….at the same time, we are also trying hydrogen,” Tata Motors Executive Director Girish Wagh instructed PTI.
As hydrogen gasoline cell or hydrogen inside combustion engine can in all probability be a viable know-how for heavy duty, longer period transportation, the auto main is investing within the know-how, he famous.

“Therefore we are investing in it and getting into these trials to get real life feedback and understand how this technology can be deployed. So from that perspective, I think this experimentation is very important,” Wagh mentioned.
From the trial run, the corporate would obtain a suggestions in phrases of efficiency of this know-how in actual life working situations, he mentioned.
“We will also understand what are the infrastructure requirements which will be necessary to commercialise hydrogen. We will also try to understand what is required in terms of commercial viability, and then finally, the policy support which will be required,” Wagh said.
Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, beneath the National Green Hydrogen Mission, has awarded the tender to Tata Motors for the trial run.
Flagging off three trucks right here, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari mentioned hydrogen is the gasoline of the long run with immense potential to rework India’s transportation sector by decreasing emissions and enhancing vitality self-reliance.
“Such initiatives will accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility in heavy-duty trucking, and move us closer to an efficient, low-carbon future,” he added.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi mentioned the start of trial is a big step ahead in showcasing the potential of inexperienced hydrogen in decarbonising India’s transportation sector.
This initiative, half of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, displays the federal government’s dedication to driving innovation and reaching India’s vitality independence whereas contributing to world local weather objectives, he added.
Tata Motors is creating progressive mobility options powered by various gasoline applied sciences equivalent to battery electrical, CNG, LNG, hydrogen inside combustion, and hydrogen gasoline cell.
