Debutant spinner Sonal Dinusha and fast bowlers Vishwa Fernando and Asitha Fernando took two wickets every to assist Sri Lanka restrict Bangladesh to 220 for eight at stumps on the opening day of the second Test on Wednesday (June 25, 2025).
Opening batter Anamul Haque did not capitalize on a reprieve when Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis dropped him off fast bowler Asitha Fernando.
Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam shared a promising partnership of 38 runs however Dhananjaya de Silva eliminated Mominul (21), caught by substitute fielder Pawan Rathnayak. This left the guests 71 for 2 at lunch.
Sri Lanka took two fast wickets after lunch as Fernando had Shanto caught behind by Mendis for eight.
Tharindu Rathnayake then had Shadman caught by de Silva for 46 leaving Bangladesh 4 down for 76.
Rahim and Litton Das shared 67 runs for the fifth wicket. Liton (34) edged a catch to Mendis and Vishwa Fernando didn’t miss out on a second likelihood given by Rahim (35) within the deep.
All-rounder Dinusha, who’s 24, made his debut after the retirement of Angelo Mathews.
