The State Department is firing over 1,300 profession diplomats and civil servants in keeping with a dramatic reorganisation plan initiated by the Trump administration earlier this yr.

A senior State Department official stated on Friday (July 11, 2025) that the division is sending layoff notices to 1,107 civil servants and 246 overseas service officers with home assignments within the United States.

While lauded by President Donald Trump’s administration as overdue and essential to make the division leaner and more environment friendly, the cuts have been roundly criticised by present and former diplomats who say they may weaken U.S. affect and its skill to counter current and rising threats overseas.
