U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday (September 1, 2025) claimed that India has now “offered” to cut its tariffs to nothing, “but it’s getting late”, as he mentioned that India buys most of its oil and army merchandise from Russia and little or no from the U.S.

“What few people understand is that we do very little business with India, but they do a tremendous amount of business with us,” Mr. Trump mentioned in a publish on Truth Social.

He added that India sells to the U.S., its largest “client”, “massive” quantities of products, “but we sell them very little – Until now a totally one-sided relationship, and it has been for many decades.”

“The reason is that India has charged us, until now, such high tariffs, the most of any country, that our businesses are unable to sell into India,” he mentioned. “It has been a totally one-sided disaster! Also, India buys most of its oil and military products from Russia, very little from the U.S. They have now offered to cut their Tariffs to nothing, but it’s getting late. They should have done so years ago. Just some simple facts for people to ponder!!!” Mr. Trump mentioned.

Mr. Trump’s feedback come as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin.

The Mr. Trump administration has imposed 25% reciprocal tariffs on India and an extra 25% levies for Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil, bringing the entire duties imposed on India to 50%, among the many highest on this planet.

India has known as the tariffs imposed by the U.S. “unjustified and unreasonable”. New Delhi mentioned that, like all main economic system, it can take all essential measures to safeguard its nationwide pursuits and financial safety.

Prime Minister Modi has asserted he can’t compromise on the pursuits of farmers, cattle-rearers, small-scale industries, cautioning “pressure on us may increase, but we will bear it”.
