People from all walks of life attended the final rites of eminent astrophysicist Dr. Jayant Narlikar in Pune as he was cremated with full state honours.

The final rites have been carried out on the Vaikunth Electric Crematorium within the metropolis. Earlier within the day, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar supplied floral tributes to his mortal stays on the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), the establishment Dr. Narlikar based.

Dr. Narlikar (86), a recipient of Padma Vibhushan, died in his sleep on Tuesday (May 20, 2025) morning.

Students, lecturers, researchers from IUCAA, neighbouring National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), Savitribai Phule Pune University and different establishments and other people from varied walks of life together with theatre, literature and humanities paid their final respects to him.
