At least 20 folks have died after a migrant boat capsized off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, a United Nations company and native media reported on Wednesday (August 13, 2025).
Rescuers have recovered 20 our bodies thus far and operations had been persevering with, in line with preliminary studies by Ansa information company. Between 70 and 80 folks had been believed to have survived.
Filippo Ungaro, from the U.N.’s refugee company UNHCR, expressed “deep anguish” over the catastrophe and mentioned extra migrants may nonetheless be lacking at sea.
“Twenty bodies have been recovered and the same number are missing,” he wrote on his account on social media platform X.
The Italian Interior Ministry didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.
