India aspires to capture 10% of the global demand for green hydrogen, which is anticipated to exceed 100 MMT by 2030, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Naik mentioned on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). He mentioned the ambition is to make India a serious producer of green hydrogen and a global hub of its export.

Speaking at an occasion by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Naik mentioned that this ambition would require the nation to proceed innovating to “strengthen certification and trading mechanism(s), ensure offtake certainty and unlocking green finance through instruments as viability gap funding, green bonds, and multilateral bank support.”

Green Hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced utilizing renewable vitality sources like photo voltaic, wind or hydropower. Herein, the electrical energy generated is utilised to break up water into hydrogen and oxygen. Launched in 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aspires to flip Indian right into a global hub for manufacturing, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

Mr. Naik argued that, with technological advances within the realm of photo voltaic photovoltaic (PV), offshore wind and electrolyser effectivity, the associated fee of producing hydrogen was already coming down, and is anticipated to proceed doing so. Earlier in his tackle, the MoS had pointed to integration, storage options, land availability and value competitiveness being “critical areas of focus”.

“However, these challenges are solvable,” he acknowledged.

Private sector enjoying a pioneering function

The Minister of State mentioned that the personal sector was essaying a “pioneering role“ in the green hydrogen sector. He observed Indian companies are building gigascale projects, electrolyser manufacturing facilities, pilot projects for hydrogen mobility and blending and refuelling infrastructure.

“Many are also forging global partnerships to ensure cost competitiveness and position India as a reliable exporter in a global market expected to exceed 100 MMT by 2030,” he acknowledged.

Use of Green Hydrogen in crucial sectors

Mr. Naik enumerated that the federal government has launched pilot tasks, exploring the direct use of green hydrogen, in crucial sectors, as metal, transport and delivery. 23 tasks have been sanctioned as half of their analysis and growth initiatives, with greater than 100 being evaluated for establishing centre of excellence.
