Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) walks right into a document retailer with a field stuffed with vinyl, and into bother as all the time. This is the opening of Season 3 of Reacher, an adaptation of Lee Child’s Persuader, the seventh in his Jack Reacher sequence, which particulars the adventures of a retired Military Policeman, who walks right into a city, smells one thing rotten, investigates and rights the wrongs, beating up the dangerous guys alongside the way in which.
“We had strategised it from the very beginning,” says Child over a video name from London. “We felt season one and season two introduced Reacher to the wider TV audience, by showing his real family in Season 1, (an adaptation of the first Reacher book, Killing Floor) and then showing his professional family in Season 2.”
Now that the viewer is aware of who Reacher is, mentioned Child who can also be govt producer on the sequence, the sphere was huge open. “We decided to do a classic, lone wolf Reacher story, and Persuader seemed right for that. It has a great location and opening. It has some great villains, including a sinister guy at the top of the conspiracy called Quinn.”

The enormous bodyguard, Paulie, performed by Olivier Richters, Child says, upped the stakes. “We know Reacher will have to fight him at some point, not straight away, maybe not in the third episode, maybe not in the fourth but we know it’s coming. So there’s a huge tension there — can Reacher beat a guy who is so much bigger than him?
There were no negatives from Season 1 and Season 2, Child says. “My dad, who was Irish, used to say he liked things the same, but different. We had to keep Reacher feeling the same, but give variety in terms of location, plot and the feel of the show. In Season 3, Reacher is all alone, with no support, no help, undercover and in danger all the time. It’s still a great Reacher story, but is a different flavour from what we’ve done before.”
Though Season 2, an adaptation of Bad Luck and Trouble, finds Reacher with buddies, Child says, he’s nonetheless on his personal. “His choices have been different from theirs. That was part of the tension in Season 2. The others had moved on into jobs, they were professionals, with nice clothes and homes and all the things Reacher did not have and for a moment he thought, ‘Am I the idiot, or are they?’”

October 2024’s In Too Deep is the 29th e-book within the sequence. So there’s loads of materials to adapt. “I hope we do them all,” Child says. The solely drawback is the arc that begins with the 14th e-book within the sequence, 61 Hours (2010). Reacher likes the sound of Susan Turner’s voice sufficient to resolve to go and meet her. Turner is the commanding officer of the one hundred and tenth Special Investigations Unit that Reacher arrange. Through three books, Worth Dying For (2010), A Wanted Man (2012) and Never Go Back (2013), Reacher lastly meets Turner in a passable payoff.

On how the arc can be tailored for the present, Child says, “That ends with Never Go Back, which was one of the Tom Cruise movies. Whether or not we would repeat what already happened in the movies, I don’t know. There are plenty of books to choose from and we don’t have to take that decision yet. We will be taking that decision in 25 years, when we’ve done all the others.”
Apart from the novels, Child has additionally written quick tales that includes Reacher. “I have a lot of fun doing them, but I think of them as extra giveaways.”
Happy place
Child is all reward for Alan Ritchson as Reacher. “I love him. It’s one of those happy things where he’s perfect on the screen as Reacher, and also good fun off-screen. We have a laugh and joke. He is a very nice man. He’s got a lovely family. Reacher is a happy show, and that’s because of Alan. He’s the leader because he’s the main character and he keeps everybody amused and working hard. I’m so happy that we chose him, and so happy he agreed to do it.
Fan-favourite Frances Neagley, Reacher’s former colleague in the 110th Special Investigations Unit, is getting her own spin-off. “They start shooting this month. I’ve seen the screenplay. It’s really good, and Maria Sten, who plays Neagley, is fabulous.”

While they ask Child’s opinion, he says, “My philosophy is to choose the right people and then let them do it without looking over their shoulder. It ultimately becomes counterproductive if you’re always nagging them, if they’re worried about what you think every day.”
On the e-book entrance, since 2020’s The Sentinel, Child has been writing the books along with his brother, Andrew. “My brother is writing them now, and so I’m waiting for the next one just like you. It’ll be out this fall. I bet it’s really good. I just hope it’s not better than I could have done!”
