U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Sunday (May 25, 2025) that he had agreed to lengthen a deadline for trade talks with the European Union until July 9, after the pinnacle of the EU government physique stated the bloc wanted extra time to “reach a good deal.”

Mr. Trump instructed reporters on Sunday (May 25, 2025) that he had granted the request. He stated that Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, instructed him “we will rapidly get together to see if we can work something out.”

Ms. Von der Leyen stated earlier on Sunday (May 25, 2025) in a social media publish that the EU was prepared to transfer shortly in trade talks with the U.S. however wanted extra time to strike a deal. Ms. Von der Leyen stated in a publish on X that she had a “good” cellphone name with Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump had stated on Friday (May 23, 2025) that he was dissatisfied with the tempo of trade talks with the EU and threatened to put 50% tariffs on all EU items from June 1. In early April, Mr. Trump had set a 90-day window for trade talks for EU and the U.S. which was to finish on July 9.
