Unfenced India-Bangla border brings terrain challenges: Authorities | India Information

NEW DELHI: Authorities on Tuesday advised the Lok Sabha that 864.5 km of the full 4,096.7 km India-Bangladesh land border, is but to be fenced, which incorporates 174.5 km of non-feasible hole, in a written reply to query by Trinamool Congress MP Deepak Adhikari.
The MP from West Bengal, which shares the longest border with Bangladesh, had requested the house ministry concerning the particulars of the full land involving border space with Bangladesh; the main points of states which share land border with Bangladesh; the main points of complete size of land border with Bangladesh not lined by the fencing; and the explanations for not fencing the land border with Bangladesh.
In reply, junior house minister Nityanand Rai advised the Home that the full size of India-Bangladesh border is 4,096.7 km. States sharing land border with Bangladesh are West Bengal (2,216.7 km), Assam (263 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Tripura (856 km) and Mizoram (318 km), he added.
“A size of 864.5 km of the India-Bangladesh border is but to be fenced which features a size of 174.5 km of non-feasible hole,” the minister stated. On incomplete fencing, Rai stated, “The land border with Bangladesh stays partially unfenced attributable to challenges corresponding to troublesome terrains like marshlands and landslide-prone areas.” He added that “objections from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), restricted working seasons and delays in land acquisition” have been liable for the fencing not being accomplished.
