Why is Trump keen on a rare-earth minerals deal with Ukraine?

Before President Zelenskyy exited the White House final week following a public showdown with the U.S. President and his deputy, Donald Trump was keen on a deal with Ukraine that may have given the U.S. entry to Ukraine’s uncommon earth minerals, amongst different goodies.

This was to have been a return present for America’s assist to Ukraine in its conflict in opposition to Russia. Why did Trump slim down on this one factor? Why are uncommon earth minerals necessary?
